At the Tyndale Fellowship Conference in Cambridge, I presented on the earliest doctrine of creation written in Chinese—that of the Tang-dynasty Church of the East—read in conversation with science and religion.
The paper
“‘Looking up the creation in piety, and being fascinated by the Artisan-King’: The Earliest Doctrine of Creation in Chinese in Trialogue with Science and Religion.”
Summary
The Church of the East missionaries entered the capital of Tang China in 635 and were at once faced with the challenge of presenting their central doctrines to the Tang emperor Taizong—among them a doctrine of creation, which the paper reads in a trialogue among theology, science, and religion.
