Chinese Pneumatologies: The Spirit’s Dance with Spirits — Fuller Doctoral Seminar (TH866)

I delivered a guest video lecture, “Chinese Pneumatologies: The Holy Spirit’s Dance with Spirits and a Constructive Pneumatology,” for the doctoral seminar TH866 (Pneumatology) at Fuller Theological Seminary, taught by Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen.

Summary

The multi-faceted and variegated spirit world of China serves as a “dancing floor” for the Holy Spirit, facilitating meaningful interactions and producing diverse pneumatologies across the nearly 1,400-year history of Chinese Christianity. The lecture traces key historical developments: Jingjiao (the Luminous Teaching, the seventh to ninth centuries), Yelikewen (the thirteenth to fourteenth centuries), Jesuit missionaries in the Ming and Qing dynasties, Protestant missionaries in the Qing, the Pentecostal movement introduced by the missionaries, and the indigenous Ling’en yundong (the Spiritual Gifts Movement) of the Republican era.
