Convening the 2025 Symposium on Chinese Christianity, Its Centennial Mission, and Bible Translation — Fuller

On July 24–25, 2025, I organized an international symposium at Fuller Theological Seminary on Chinese Christianity, its centennial mission, and Chinese Bible translation. Fifteen papers were delivered by scholars from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Israel, Canada, and the United States, with more than eighty attending in person. I am grateful to the sponsors: Fuller’s Center for Missiological Research (CMR), Chinese Studies Center (CSC), and the Asia Research Center (ARC).

My paper

“从‘神学释经’到‘神学译经’：兼论《圣经恢复本》的基督论与迦克墩信经的关系” (“From ‘Theological Interpretation of Scripture’ to ‘Theological Translation of Scripture’: With a Discussion of the Relationship between the Christology of the Chinese Recovery Version and the Chalcedonian Creed”).

The paper argues that the guiding principles of the Theological Interpretation of Scripture apply equally to the principles and practice of translation, proposing a “Theological Translation of Scripture” tested on the Christology embodied in the Recovery Version in relation to the Chalcedonian Creed.

The symposium became the basis for the co-edited volume Chinese Christianity and Bible Translation. The proceedings are also being published in simplified Chinese.
